Another year over and a new one just begun…
If, like me, you normally work until Christmas Eve it can be hard to feel festive until you can leave work on that day - although we did have mince pies at work most days in the week before that…so after a quick lunchtime pint with colleagues the Christmas tour started…
Reading was first, where we had the first turkey of the festive season before heading to the Oakford for some shambolic Christmas songs and a bit of chat. Lots of friends we hadn’t seen for ages. Good times. Sore throat and cold taking hold by the end of the night.
The next morning (Christmas Day no less) after a bacon and scrambled egg breakfast we drove to Farnborough to find my family had already opened all their presents when we got there…Ruth and I had saved ours so it was a bit odd…we huddled in the corner and opened our presents from each other…(tickets to see Blur, a hovercraft experience for me, matching scarf, gloves and hat from me along with a trip to Bratislava) I’m pretty sure we were both really pleased with what we got each other – I am anyway, and also relieved I decided against the linux netbook for Ruth. Lunch, and then overly competitive behaviour on DVD games followed and before long we were back in the hotel.
The next day it was back to Reading, highlights included some excellent games of Who Am I and an impressive 34 story round of jenga.
The next day it was off in to the wildes of Surrey, which included the longest 10 minute walk to a pub I’ve ever done and some slightly inebriated pasta cooking – not to mention my first go on a Wii fit. Apparently my Nintendo age is 41. Merry Christmas.
Next morning we headed back in to London with gifts and family along too (making public transport no mean feat) and went ice skating at the Tower of London. Home for an early night!
A couple of days of not doing much followed with the aim of gettng energy back for NYE, which we were spending with friends that were coming up to London. On the Tuesday night I woke in the night with a bit of tooth ache – I didn’t think too much about it at the time.
In the end we opted to go to 93 Feet East on Brick Lane, with a curry first. Nathan and Ellie came to hang out at our flat for a while in the morning and then went out with Ruth while I did some work on my book. By this time I had taken some painkillers for my tooth ache. I had some more in the club and made it through the night.
The next day my face was in serious pain and I called the Royal London Hospital out of hours dental line they referred me to an emergency dentist and I spent some of New Years Day in a dental surgery. It turned out I had an infected wisdom tooth and it had spread on to my jaw and glands – leaving me in lots of pain and unable to open my mouth. Happy New Year!
I had work the next day, which I did from home in lots of pain – I started a course of anti biotics and prepared myself to go through with the dentists advice… which was to have the wisdom tooth taken out. That happened yesterday afternoon and explains why I’m up in the middle of the night typing!
Happy New Year! What’s your favourite dental tale?
